Wings of Fire series by Tui T. Sutherland
Origins of the Series
Tui T. Sutherland launched the Wings of Fire series in 2012 with The Dragonet Prophecy, the first book in what would become a multi-arc saga spanning over 15 novels, two legends, and several graphic adaptations. The story centers around five young dragonets—Clay, Tsunami, Glory, Starflight, and Sunny—who are raised in secret to fulfill a prophecy that promises to end a brutal war among the dragon tribes of Pyrrhia.
Sutherland’s world is divided into seven dragon tribes:
MudWings
SeaWings
RainWings
NightWings
SandWings
SkyWings
IceWings
Each tribe has its own culture, powers, and politics, and the series explores themes of identity, loyalty, destiny, and the cost of war—all through the eyes of dragon protagonists.
The graphic novels began with The Dragonet Prophecy in 2018, adapted by Tui T. Sutherland and illustrated by Mike Holmes. The adaptation was faithful to the original plot but condensed for visual storytelling. The result was a fast-paced, emotionally resonant journey that retained the heart of the original while adding expressive character designs and dynamic action sequences.
The illustrations by Mike Holmes are a standout feature. His ability to convey emotion through dragon expressions, body language, and panel composition adds layers to the story. The color palettes shift to reflect mood—dark purples and blues for NightWing scenes, warm golds and reds for SandWing deserts.
The graphic novels also use visual pacing effectively. Quiet moments are given space to breathe, while action scenes are tightly framed for intensity. This balance keeps readers engaged and emotionally invested.
Such detailed expressions packed in a comic book brings a more photo realistic imaginations and create intrinsic feelings of the storyline as if the reader is surrounded by the thematic beauties mentioned in the story.
